Product Description

Instructor: Kay Rynerson, LMP; NCBTMB 450656-08

Day 1 - Thumbs-Free Massage: Prone

Join us in exploring ways to do a full-body Swedish-style massage without ever using your thumbs. Not ever. You will learn techniques using your fingers, fists, forearms and elbows and your clients will never know the difference. Holding, rocking, gliding, wringing, using friction and more, you will wonder why you ever used such tiny tools as thumbs for such big jobs as giving a full-body massage.

You will learn to wring the back, knuckle the neck, roll over the traps, elbow wave the ESG and more. No part of the body requires thumbs – you will see.

Moves from the neck to the tips of the toes include the “kitten squeeze,” “cross-wrist traps push,” “rocking the hams,” and “lemon squeeze” for the calves. Adapted from sports massage, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi and more, these moves have been exhaustively road-tested and remain central to most of my work on the massage table in clinical practice. Each successive class gets better with invaluable input from class participants during the “show and tell” segment (participation is optional) as we mine decades of massage experience in the room to improve and improvise our vital work to relax, invigorate and assist the healing process in clients.

Day 2 - Thumbs-Free Massage: Supine

Join us in exploring ways to do a full-body Swedish-style massage without ever using your thumbs. Not ever. You will learn techniques using your fingers, fists, forearms and elbows and your clients will never know the difference. Holding, rocking, gliding, wringing, using friction and more, you will wonder why you ever used such tiny tools as thumbs for such big jobs as giving a full-body massage.

You will learn to thoroughly address the neck, arms, hands, legs and feet. No part of the body requires thumbs – you will see. We will pay particular attention to learning techniques to release those overworked forearms and hands, working in ways that will not overly stress our own.

Moves from the neck to the tips of the toes include "spooning the neck", the "locomotive" for the head, "bicycle pedaling" the arms, “playing scales” on the foot and much more. Adapted from sports massage, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi and more, these moves have been exhaustively road-tested and remain central to most of my work on the massage table in clinical practice. Each successive class gets better with invaluable input from class participants during the "show and tell" segment (participation is optional) as we mine decades of massage experience in the room to improve and improvise our vital work to relax, invigorate and assist the healing process in clients.

You can use the routine learned in each class hook, line and sinker, or drop appropriate moves into the work you already do as needed.

You will leave with a fully illustrated handout each day.

What to Bring: Set of sheets, pillow/bolster, face cradle cover; wear loose fitting-clothes
