Day 1 (Saturday) -- Intro to Day-Break Geriatric Massage:  Level I

This class covers the physical and psychological aspects of aging, health assessment and interviewing, benefits of massage, as well as massage techniques appropriate for both robust and frail elderly. By helping participants gain insight into meaningful work with the elderly, the therapist is put on the path to a massage career that is emotionally satisfying and addresses the growing population of elders.

The Workshop features these topics:

  • Physiological, psychological & sociological aspects of aging.
  • Client assessment, cautions & contraindications.
  • Communication with the elderly.
  • Modification of standard massage techniques and the development of methods to suit each client's special needs.

Participants are encouraged to develop clinical reasoning in with seniors in this class, as well as how to modify their hands-on technique when working with them.

What to Bring: a set of sheets, face cradle cover and a bolster/pillow

Day 1 (Saturday) -- Intro to Day-Break Geriatric Massage:  Level I

The Intro to Level II class addresses health impairments common to the aging with specific techniques for each condition.

The Workshop features these topics:

  • In depth information on the most common age-related health problems and how to work specifically with each, as well as cautions and contraindications.
  • Review of associated medical terminology.
  • Cautions in the positioning of challenged clients in wheelchairs and geriatric chairs.
  • Specific approaches to massaging people challenged with dementia/Alzheimer, arthritis and those who may be wheelchair bound.

After the workshop, you will be more comfortable with how to:

  • use the proper techniques to use while working under the direction of the prescribing physician but without the need for direct supervision.
  • work with clients who have various degrees of age-related health and mobility problems.
  • work in an Assisted Living Facility or Nursing Home.

There is a student clinic in the afternoon, where students work with older volunteer models.

Registration Options: We are offering Day-Break Geriatric Institutes' two classes at a discounted group rate if you register for both classes at once, versus taking individual classes.
