Saturday - (Chinese Facial Massage & TMJ Techniques)

Stress is reflected in the face when facial muscles become tense and tighten. Unconsciously, we contort our face and creases appear across the surface of the skin as the pressures of the day intensify. This class is a blend of Chinese and Western techniques. Techniques are learned and experienced that help tone, uplift, remove tension, reduce facial lines and increase circulation to the face. Facial massage can benefit Bells Palsy, facial tics, eye droop, sinus problems, eyesight (near and far) and TMJ problems.

The treatment begins by targeting specific pressure points on the face without the use of lotion or oil--engaging 25 pressure points (including 2 on the hands) as taught by Dr. Lilly Fu, a Chinese doctor, to Lolita Knight (who has certified Debbie DeNardo). This not only relaxes the facial muscles but stimulates the lymph drainage system, thereby removing excess fluid and waste products.

The honey pat sequence involves the application of pure honey, a natural product which is a humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture. The techniques in this sequence help increase skin circulation, plump fine lines and improve overall skin tone.

Non-invasive, external TMJ techniques work to reduce jaw pain and increase mandible mobility. According to the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, "As high as 20% of the American population possesses one or more of the symptoms of a temporomandibular disorder.” The TMJ techniques in this course are effective and easy to learn.

Rejuvenation and relaxation strokes (with the use of another natural product, macadamia nut oil) further relieve tension in the face, smooth away lines and bring elasticity back to the skin.

Facial massage is an excellent addition to your massage offerings. It can be added in full or in part at the end of a massage therapy session for a pampering conclusion. This course is suitable for massage therapy students as well as seasoned massage therapists and estheticians who would like to expand their repertoire and boost their income. It is a great idea to offer this service as gift certificates for Mother’s Day, Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day and other special occasions.

This is a hands-on workshop with demonstration and practice. Participants will examine each other while looking in a mirror before the facial massages so that "before and after" comparisons can be made. They often notice a difference in their appearance at the end of the class session with major differences usually noticed two days after treatment. At the completion of this workshop you will be able to perform a Chinese Facial Massage and with the hands-on experience will also know how it feels to receive one.

What to Bring: set of sheets, bolster/pillow, a hand mirror, 2 washcloths, 1 hand towel, a headband to hold hair back from face, 2 medium size bowls (about 1.5 qt.) to soak washcloths, and a thermal carafe for hot water. Please do not wear makeup to class. Contact wearers will preferably need to remove their contacts when receiving, or wear glasses during the class. Please bring a tank top if possible or a shirt that exposes the base of the neck.

Sunday - (Indian Head Massage for Chair & Table)

Based on the ancient Indian healing system of Ayurveda, this technique has been practiced for over a thousand years. The massage is calming yet revitalizing, and focuses on the parts of the body most prone to tension and stress: the upper back, neck, shoulders, face and scalp. This technique is delivered with the client fully clothed using a chair or as part of a complete bodywork session using a table. Students will learn pressure points, tension relieving strokes for the head and neck and how to deliver the technique with or without oil. Indian Head Massage encourages relaxation and the benefits to the client are many, including relief of eyestrain and headaches, promotion of hair and scalp health, improved concentration, increased circulation and reduced stress. The instructor includes organic Ayurvedic herbal scalp oil from Solavedi. A blissful technique your clients will love!

What to Bring: Set of sheets and bolster/pillow. Please have clean hair and use no hair products on the day of the class. If you have long hair, please bring a hair accessory to pull it back. For the table segment it's best to wear a tank top or Velcro spa wrap.
