Level I covers the physical and psychological aspects of aging, health assessment and interviewing, benefits of massage, marketing to the frail and robust population, as well as techniques appropriate for both robust and frail elderly. By helping participants gain insight into meaningful work with the elderly, the therapist is put on the path to a massage career that is emotionally satisfying and addresses the growing population of elders.

The Workshop features these topics:

  • Physiological, psychological & sociological aspects of aging.
  • Client assessment, cautions & contraindications.
  • Communication with the elderly.
  • Modification of standard massage techniques and the development of methods to suit each client's special needs.
  • How to establish a Geriatric Massage practice. Topics include: marketing to senior facilities, referral sources, and active seniors in the community at large.
  • Practical hands-on work with older people.

Participants are encouraged to develop clinical reasoning in their first hands-on phase of the presentation. There is a student clinic on the third day, where older volunteer models are brought in to participate. Students are encouraged to coordinate their own model when possible. Models should be 65 or older. The student session will have 2 sessions, one will be held at 1:30pm and the other at 2:15pm. Students will work in pairs with their volunteer. When you have a volunteer arranged, please contact Robbin at 206.853.6875 to confirm the time and volunteer details.
