Day 1 -- Advanced Whiplash Treatment

Whiplash is at epidemic levels with 3 million new cases every year. That is one new whiplash injury every 20 seconds, but many whiplash victims don’t get the treatment they need. Knowing whiplash treatment will set you apart, and make you the therapist to see. Not all injuries are created equal, and knowing the facts about whiplash injuries is critical for great results.

The instructor, Don Soran DC, has "Whiplash and Brain Traumatology Advanced Certification" from the Spine Research Institute of San Diego and has certification in SAE Accident Reconstruction (Vehicle Dynamics related to Accident Reconstruction). In this workshop, the instructor will review videos of actual accidents involving real people in various controlled situations with the class and discuss the dynamics of the impacts, so students can understand how the body is affected in collisions and how speed and type of collision create different types of injuries.

Although car collisions can involve all structures of the body, this class will focus on the impact of whiplash on the neck, shoulder girdle and upper back.  Treatment techniques will include a mix of deep tissue, myofascial release, pin and stretch, cross fiber friction, positional release and an introduction to instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation (Edge tool and Logic tool application).   Learn how to treat the anterior neck muscles in ways not covered in basic massage school as well as the posterior and lateral neck.  Soft tissues from superficial to deep will be worked throughout the neck (including those attaching to the anterior cervical spine), shoulder girdle and upper back.

With working knowledge of the how and why of whiplash treatment, you will have the confidence to treat any accident injuries so you can provide the best care possible. These techniques are easy to apply and can be used immediately.  Body mechanics are critical for proper care and longevity and will be stressed for your success.

What to Bring: Set of sheets. face cradle cover (or pillow case); pillow or bolster; wear loose clothing

Day 2 -- Professional Boundaries and Dual Relationships -- Ethics

Ethics may be one of the topics we all dread of having to take. I know the topic can be one that has you feeling, “Oh not again,” but we will make your experience one you can use. There may be more to the rules than just following a list of do’s and don’ts, however, this topic doesn’t need to be boring.

Are there things that appear to be ethical, legal and moral but are illegal? You need to be up to date on the WAC’s, RCW’s, HIPAA and related rules. Don’t let your ability to practice be in jeopardy, because you didn’t know the rules.

Society is changing rapidly, but, boundaries and relationships have foundations that have to be maintained. Don't think you know what is legal, know what is legal. Legally, not knowing the law is not a defensible excuse if you get into legal trouble.  Know the rules and how they apply to your practice, so you can avoid inadvertently crossing boundaries that you shouldn't.

Satisfies NCBTMB, WA & ID's ethics requirement.

What to Bring: Something to write with -- pen or pencil.
