About Onsen: The Onsen Techniques® was developed by Rich Phaigh, DMT, LMT for World Class athletes and the treatment of chronic pain. The technique uses visual, palpatory and range of motion tests to assess skeletal alignment and the functionality of the joints and soft tissues within the body. To correct dysfunction, Onsen uses muscle energy technique (MET) to realign skeletal structures, transverse friction massage (TFM) to soften and realign adhesions. Stretching / strengthening exercises are applied to lengthen chronically tight muscles, strengthen chronically stretched and weak muscles so the body attains balance, and corrections achieved in treatment hold. Practitioners work with clients to teach these self-care techniques. Assessments and treatments are quick and pain free.
Certification Information: The Onsen Techniques® is divided into four 20-hour classes where assessment and treatment of the entire body is learned. Classes may be taken separately and out of order, but it is highly recommended the students begin with Volume I to learn the core fundamentals. Students may certify as Onsen Therapists by taking a certification test which is separate from the classes--please contact the instructor for further details.
Class Information: In Volume III, students will learn how to use MET to correct scapular and spinal (cervical and thoracic) deviations. Specific postural patterns, such as forward head or military postures, will be reviewed to understand how overly stretched or highly contracted muscles can affect alignment in the body. In addition, students learn strength exercises and stretches designed to maintain specific corrections to be given to their clients.
Students learn how to:
- assess and treat Type I dysfunctions of the cervical and thoracic spine with MET
- assess and treat deviations/limitations of the O/A and A/A joints, plus C-3 through T-12
- assess and treat scapular deviations
- assess and treat high/low shoulder
- assess and treat specific postural patterns, such as forward head posture
- apply appropriate exercises and stretches
A detailed 44-page manual, in-class workbook and DVD of Rich Phaigh demonstrating the techniques taught in class will be provided as part of the class fee.

Other classes by Instructor:
Develop visual, palpatory and range of motion assessment skills for the scapula and the cervical and thoracic spine. Learn to correct deviations using muscle energy technique (MET) to bring the cervical and thoracic spine and scapula into alignment. Learn to assess deviations/limitations of the O/A and A/A joints as well as C-3 through T12 and how to correct. Stretches and strengthening exercises are taught so corrections hold.
